Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A small white clapboard house with a gabled roof and covered porch stands between two tall palm trees, surrounded by dune grass and sand.

A mini-split compressor here starts and stops through almost the entire calendar. Homes in Maui County, HI run cooling about ten months a year, from March through December. The condenser fan and contactor cycle with it, and the refrigerant lines carry load that most systems in other climates get a long break from. A contractor sizing a new system for this county has to account for that sustained demand upfront, because an undersized unit will run harder, shed capacity sooner, and cost more to replace earlier. Getting the load calculation right before the equipment is ordered is what a good installation here turns on.

Electrical service is where a mini-split installation in Maui County gets decided. Half the homes in Maui County, Hawaii were built in 1985 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built for window units and resistance heat carries wiring sized to that load, and a contractor quoting a ductless system has to find out whether the panel and the branch circuits can take what the new equipment draws before the equipment itself gets priced. If they cannot, the panel work goes on the quote first.

The Mini-split System a Contractor Installs

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall of the room being served, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. Outside, the condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket at the exterior wall and houses the compressor and the fan that release heat to the open air.

A conduit bundle runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying the refrigerant lines, the power cable, and the condensate drain line. A disconnect box is mounted near the outdoor unit as part of the same installation.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what the configuration looks like for this particular house.
